(1/5) Not hiring respectful staff
By Shantel Hylton on Dec 24, 2020
Today, Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020, my boyfriend and I had encountered a disappointing situation with a LCBO Cashier. This was by far one of my favourite locations until we had witness such disrespectful behaviour. The LCBO Cashier had taken my driver license to check my ID which was totally fine, however, I noticed how he was looking at me and looking at my license for almost about a minute, which was weird by the looks of his actions. Then, he asked me if I wanted to donate to Sick Kids, and I kindly said no thank you. He then looked at me unpleasantly and disgusted then asked “Are you sure?” and I said no once again. I thought too myself, don’t make me feel bad or try to pressure me by giving me negative facial expressions because I do not want to donate. I had let that first incident slide. Second issue had occurred within seconds with my boyfriend. The cashier had asked my boyfriend to take his mask off to see his face, which again totally understandable, that was fine. Then, as he appears to look at my boyfriend ID who just happens to be an African American male. The cashier decides to stare at my boyfriend and said “Sir, are you intoxicated your moving a bit slow?” Which first of all didn’t sit right with me. How do you ask somebody that? Because what if he did have something wrong with him physically? He then called over his manager to check if my boyfriend was intoxicated or not and obviously, my boyfriend wasn’t and the manager agreed my boyfriend wasn’t. Clearly. It was just the cashier actions alone who was a caucasian male make such accusations towards an African American male. The cashier wasn’t giving any other person a problem until we came. The cashier also didn’t know how to cash out gift cards we had to repeat to him several times how much we were using on the gift card and he still didn’t comprehend and was giving us such a hard time because he just wanted to be difficult at this time of year (Christmas). The manager was told by myself that I would be writing a review. This is unacceptable and very disrespectful. I hope that cashier realizes how to handle situations and be a little more smarter.
