Dollarama | by Dyane Brown on Aug 06, 2018
In the past Ihave always appreciated the excellent service at Dollarama at Port Place Mall. On Sunday August 5th at 10.45 I was served by a teller who was ranting about the homeless camp across from the mall to the woman ahead of me. I told him I was buying supplies to make signs to support the camp as there was to be a march that day by white supremacists againt the camp. He replied that the store lost $500 a day because of the camp and that he knew it was theft from campers and that he had the proof from five security cameras on top of the building, that there was an overdose a day at the at camp, that they refused to let service providers into the camp and that every other business was suffering in the mall. I do not believe much of this to be true and for sure I know that service providers are not denied access and that there is certainly not any daily overdosing going on there. I have shopped exclusively in this area for years and I am a business owner two blocks away. I have observed that the area is cleaner and quieter since the camp was set up and that the majority of the residents there are positive and productive even those with psychiatric problems have found it stabilizing. Some are able to go out and get jobs because of the safety and supportive atmosphere of the camp. I found it very disturbing that this employee would bad mouth the camp of struggling and vulnerable people. I expect Dollarama is busier because of people like me buying supplies for the camp.My friend said that she had a similar experience there a month ago. I found this behaviour rude and confrontational.
